Broiler has been a landmark on Firestone Blvd. in
Downey, California since it opened in 1958. Built by Harvey Ortner and his
wife Minnie, the restaurant was designed by famed “Googie” style architect
Paul B Clayton. People soon came from all over the USA to experience Harvey’s.
During it’s heyday, some 3,000 hot rodders and custom car enthusiasts would
make the circuit from Grisinger's (now George's) drive-in, in Long Beach
to Holly's (demolished after being featured in “Pulp Fiction”) in Hawthorne
and on to the Wich Stand on Slauson and Overhill, ending in Downey at none
other than the World Famous Harvey’s Broiler.
RIGHT- WE DID IT!
TO ALL WHO LENT A HAND, SPREAD THE WORD, AND KEPT THE FAITH!
It's official , the broiler
is being rebuilt!!! Jim Louder, owner of the Bob's Big Boy franchise in Torrance
has stepped up and is going to bring back our beloved Broiler. Sure it will
be a Bob's, but as much of the old Harvey's that can be preserved or resurrected,
will be, including the "Broiler" signage and the Fat Boy, which
will be moved to the back of the building in the "Drive In" section.
Yep, the Drive-in is coming back. How cool is that?!!
